From the highway, the valley is about 45 km deep and has a high border crossing to Austria. This border crossing can only be used from April 15 to October 15 because of too much snow in that period.
The distance to Klagenfurt with its miniature town of Minimundus, from the border is + 35 km.
Halfway up one can turn right for a ride high over the mountains with beautiful views over the various valleys. The route is called: Panoramska cesta.
At the end of the valley is the nature park Savinja Dolina where you can take lovely walks with the chance to see deer and other wildlive.
Between Luce and Solcava you will find an ice cave with beautiful ice stalactites. This cave is located high in the mountains and these stalagtites are formed every winter.
In Gornjigrad you will find the only cathedral in Slovenia. A great big and beautiful cathedral. For viewing one must report to the office.
In Ljubno (Okonina) find the sports center Praprotnik where you can kayak and raft and swim. You can also enjoy delicious food at an affordable price.
In Varpolje is the famous Menina campsite where you can swim freely in the present lake. Here you can also rent bikes for a trip through a part of the Savinja valley.
In Mozirje you can swim in the Savinja or take a short ride to the lake in Brasluce or the modern swimming pool in Velenje or Sempeter or the indoor pool of Therme Toposica. take the gondola to Golte and after the botanical garden, where all the plants and trees you can find in Slovenia are collected, you can float down by parachute. In velenje there is a castle which is free to visit and a mining museum which you should definitely visit to get an idea of how coal was extracted from the ground in the past.
In Vransko you will find the motorcycle museum and a climbing wall where you can climb a beautiful wall under supervision.
At some distance, near the town of Celje, there is an artificial toboggan run where especially the youth can enjoy themselves.
You can paintball on various terrains. Horseback riding or driving in the area with a real coach you can at various tourist farms.
At about 50 km on the highway you can visit the cities of Ljubljana and Maribor.
Both cities are real student cities where especially Ljubljana is bustling with activity until the wee hours.
A day trip to the coast of Slovenia is well worthwhile. The coast can be reached in 1 ½ to 2 hours with a visit to the internationally known Lipiza with its Lipizzaner horses or the famous caves of Postonja.
A drive to the most famous place in Slovenia Bled with its very touristy appearance takes one and a half to two hours.
